Service Learning

Service learning is an innovative teaching and learning method that integrated community activities into academic curricula and has been practiced the past 15 years in the I CAN program at Southside High School.

Classroom based learning complements community experiences and equips students to reflect and take action in addressing community needs.

By connecting work with community goals, service learning participants develop as community members dedicated to lifelong learning and civic responsibility.

Beyond I CAN workers asked to continue doing for others as they were learning jobs and responsibilities at Beyond I CAN.

Some of the current projects are: Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, ABC Quilts for Babies with AIDS, Camp Summersault, and recycling cans for a lady who turns them in for money to help pay for her prescriptions.
